Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) invites applications from undergraduate or postgraduate degree holders in the veterinary sciences, with a minimum of 1-3 years of experience in attending to animal-related emergencies, to join its Central India Tiger Habitat Securement Project based out of Nagpur, Maharashtra.

The veterinarian will work under the supervision of the Project Head or Head Veterinarian. He or she will be the primary point of contact for all issues related to veterinary care and rehabilitation of displaced wildlife, through the operation of the Mobile Veterinary Service unit in the project area. He/she will work towards achieving the project’s goal of addressing the health and welfare needs of wild animals.

Broad responsibilities include

  • Working closely with the project team with the sole objective of providing emergency relief to animals in distress
  • Supporting the Mobile Veterinary Service through the use of appropriate veterinary and animal husbandry skills for stabilisation and treatment of injured or distressed wildlife, and transfer of animals that require special and protracted care to an established field station
  • Addressing human-wildlife conflict in and around Protected Areas of the project location and looking for appropriate options to reintroduce displaced animals into the wild
  • Providing wildlife health support to PAs in the project location by attending to wildlife mortalities, recording wildlife deaths and epidemics, and following appropriate disease diagnostics, control and preventive measures
  • Strengthening disease diagnostic operations with laboratory investigations by collecting, preserving and despatching appropriate specimens, including the conducting of autopsies on all birds, reptiles and mammals that die under care
  • Maintaining records of all rescue operations, from admission of animals to their final disposition. This would also include maintaining records/registers of treatment, husbandry, anaesthesia, surgery and laboratory investigations
  • Maintenance of all assets of the organisation (veterinary expendable, veterinary non expendable, and fixed assets)
  • Additional responsibilities as mentioned in the individual targets issued by Reporting Manager


Qualifications, experience & skills

  • Postgraduate or undergraduate degree in veterinary sciences, with a minimum 1-3 years of hands-on experience in attending to animal-related emergencies and providing disaster relief
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, and good interpersonal skills are a must
