Kohora (Assam): A one-month-old barking deer was rescued this morning from Kohora, Assam and was taken to the Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) in Kaziranga National Park for treatment.

The abandoned barking deer was found by villagers who informed the veterinarians of CWRC and the Forest Department. “According to the villagers, the rescued fawn was among a sibling of three, of which one was killed by a dog. The mother and another fawn escaped leaving this fawn behind” Dr Phulmoni Gogoi of the CWRC said.

The fawn is now being kept at CWRC for rehabilitation. Dr Gogoi added that the animal had no injuries and that it would be raised in the centre and later released into the wild.

Centre for Wildlife Rehabilitation and Conservation (CWRC) is a joint venture of the Assam Forest Department, the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI) and its international partner, the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW). Functional since August, 2002, the centre has rescued and rehabilitated hundreds of animals including the Greater one-horned rhinoceros and the Asian elephants among others.
