Bihar State Forest Department (www.forest.bih.nic.in) is responsible for the protection and maintenance of wildlife and wild habitats in the state of Bihar. This includes important terrestrial species such as the tiger, leopard, bear, hyena, bison, chital etc, besides many varieties of fish, crocodilians (including the gharial), gangetic turtles and the freshwater dolphin. Bihar is also famous for its wetlands and its several varieties of local as well as migratory bird species.

The unique features of the state include the largest coastline in the country, the saline deserts of the Rann of Kutch, grasslands and wetlands. These factors have bestowed the state with a vast diversity of flora and fauna. The majestic Asiatic lion and wild ass have their last remaining populations in Gujarat. The state’s faunal biodiversity consists of 14% of fish, 18 % of reptiles, 37% of avifauna and 25% of the mammal populations of the country.

As a practice to meet the purpose, JTEF has developed several programs supporting the field activities for conservation of tigers and elephants in their habitat. The Rufford Foundation (www.rufford.org) is an independent grant-making trust based in the UK. The Foundation concentrates its funding on nature conservation projects in developing countries undertaken by small to medium-sized organisations.
