Project Description
The ‘GajUtsav’ Campaign is an initiative aimed at securing the Right of Passage for the magnificent Asian elephants in India. In recent years, the Asian elephant’s presence has become synonymous with conflicts and threats due to anthropogenic pressures and habitat degradation. This campaign, led by the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI), strives to address these challenges and create a positive future for these iconic creatures.
Celebrating the Asian Elephant:
The GajUtsav Campaign seeks to raise awareness about the cultural and ecological significance of the Asian elephant. Through vibrant festivities, including live art creation, cultural performances, and exhibitions of elephant-inspired art pieces by pan-Indian artists, we aim to foster a sense of admiration and appreciation for these magnificent beings. These events showcase the rich history, literature, and mythology surrounding elephants in India. By highlighting their positive attributes, we foster a deeper connection between people and elephants, emphasizing the need to protect their existence.
Dialogue with Stakeholders: An active dialogue with relevant stakeholders is essential to address the rising conflicts between humans and elephants. We engage with line agencies, legal bodies, and the media to discuss the current conflict situation and explore effective mitigation strategies. By facilitating constructive conversations and sharing best practices, we strive to identify effective strategies and policies to mitigate conflicts and ensure the peaceful coexistence of both communities.
Building Popular Support: Securing the Right of Passage for elephants requires collective action and support from all sections of society. By raising awareness about elephants and their crucial role in the ecosystem, we aim to inspire individuals to actively participate in their conservation. Through education, awareness campaigns, and public outreach initiatives and leveraging the influence of policymakers, media, and communities living in elephant corridor areas we aim to empower individuals to become ambassadors for elephant conservation.
Collaborative Efforts: The GajUtsav Campaign collaborates closely with the Government of India’s Project Elephant, state forest departments, and national and global NGOs. By working together, we leverage collective expertise, resources, and networks to secure and protect elephant corridors. The campaign aligns with the recommendations of the Government of India’s Elephant Task Force report (2010), which emphasizes the importance of taking elephants to the people.
The GajUtsav Campaign is committed to safeguarding the future of Asian elephants in India. By celebrating their cultural significance, engaging in dialogue with stakeholders, and mobilizing popular support, we aim to ensure their Right of Passage. Together, we work towards a harmonious coexistence between humans and elephants, preserving the majesty of these gentle giants for generations to come.
